WHAT IS MY TYPE?
There are hundreds of "types" to classify an actor: Hunk, siren, boy next door, rebel, comic, mother, athlete, big-boned girl, murderer, scary, gay, sexy, young dad, ingenue, geek, nerd, thug, bad guy, floozy -- the list is practically endless. Type is important to many people in the industry because it makes it easier for them to keep track of the thousands of actors they see and work with. When they are looking for a doctor type, they go to their filing cabinet or computer to search for the right "doctors" to call in to audition. Some people are just one type, some are several, and some become even more types as they grow in age and maturity. In acting school, young actors are cast as elderly characters and other roles that they would never be cast in professionally. As a result, some lose sight of what their type really is, because they now think they can play most anything. This means they do not have an accurate self-image. To accurately figure out what type you are, ask people you respect what kind of type they see in you. You can also gather this information from acting classes, teachers, your peers. Watch theatre, television and film, and ask yourself which roles you could believably play. What "type" do you identify with? Chances are that may be your type.
