MARKETING

Create Your Own Website

Today everyone has a website. When you are first starting out you may not need one, but once you have a headshot, resume and a few credentials you may want to build one for yourself. You should be sure to add any other talents that you may have such as singing, voice-overs, visual artistic talent or writing talent. You can build your own site via the internet or contact small, affordable companies.

Internships

Internships are a good choice for marketing, although these are generally non-paying gigs. Working in a casting office, an agent's office, a production company's office, a commercial agent's office, etc., will bring you a wealth of information. The internships to stay away from are ones where your superiors are not interested in educating you but more interested in sending you to Starbucks for coffee runs.

Create A Reel

A reel is a very important tool and consists of a DVD of scenes that you have done on Film and TV that show you at your best. No more than 5 minutes unless you have contrasting scenes that show several sides to you as an actor. I would stay away from including theatre scenes that have been videotaped, because theater performances do not translate well onto the small screen (see AUDITIONING). Student films are also not a good idea for a reel unless it is an award-winning and really terrific film. We want to see that you have worked in the professional world and are capable of holding your own on union sets and interacting with other professional actors.

Reels nowadays are flashy and well-produced. They usually have an opening collage of fast-paced images of you in various shows before going into the first scene. Reels usually have music and title cards that introduce each scene (say, Law & Order or Spider-man). If you have a reel you almost have to have a website, because it is much easier to get people to your website than to insert a DVD into their player.
